Sony has picked up considerable steam in the Indian smartphone segment — new data from IDC suggests that it is now the second largest smartphone brand in India. This growth is largely due to Sony offering increased choice for the consumer and the new T2 Ultra Dual is a fresh step in that direction. It can best be described as a mid-range, dual SIM phablet.
The T2 shares many design features from the high-end Xperia line: it has a slim (only 7.65mm throughout) and lightweight (for its size) design, a Sony Triluminos display and flaps covering the SIM and micro SD slots (though it’s not waterproof). The front is all glass while the back is plastic, polished to a mirror sheen. The downside to this approach is that the back scratches very easily and always looks dirty.
It has a familiar user interface which runs along quite smoothly. We did not notice any lags or slowdowns even with HD videos or games. Quadrant score for the device was 9194 while AnTuTu was 18925 — this puts it roughly at par with a device like the Galaxy S3 — not bad for the price. The camera app includes some nice features like AR Effect, Sweep Panorama, Background Defocus and Timeshift burst. Not all of them work as advertised all the time. Images were a bit noisy though the 1080p video is fine.
A nice touch is the dedicated camera button and one-handed use customisation. For instance, double tapping the home button brings the notifications & quick settings down. You can choose to have a smaller QWERTY keyboard off to one side of the display (it also supports ‘swiping’). Overall, there’s a lot to like in the T2 Ultra if you like large screens. You could also consider HP’s Slate 6 which is a cheaper 6-inch device that offers double the internal storage.
