Cool smartphones that take hot shots
Why carry a digital camera when smartphones like
these are all that you need?
When the first smart phone camera came out (the
Nokia 7650, in 2002), no one had imagined that a few years down the line, the
maximum number of cameras would be sold by smartphone companies like Nokia,
Apple and Samsung. With every new iteration, they keep getting better.Higher
resolutions, better low light images, optical image stabilisation, dual lenses
and laser autofocus systems are the norm in high-end devices. Here's our pick
of the five best camera phones around today.
Apple iPhone 6 Plus
Apple puts an insane amount of effort into
improving the camera and it shows. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were a huge step up
from the 5 series in terms of design, performance and battery life. On paper,
the 6 Plus has `only' an 8 Megapixel sensor while some of the others on this
list are packing 13 or even 16 Megapixels. But it really uses those pixels
well.
Combined with the phase detection autofocus,
dual tone LED flash, optical image stabilisation and blistering fast response
you get a camera that excels while doing all the work for you. We still don't
fully understand why the smaller iPhone 6 skips out on optical image
stabilisation though which is why the 6 Plus is always the device of choice
for camera enthusiasts who want the best quality they can get for the price.
Google Nexus 6
Sure, it's a little large. Thanks to the 5.9 x 6
-inch screen, which is gorgeous. The Nexus also packs in a lot of camera power
into a device that many love for the fast operating system updates from Google
(Nexus devices always get updated first), clean and uncluttered interface (it's
pure Android, without any manufacturer customisations of bloatware) and of
course, the exception al camera performance. The Nexus 6, made by Motorola
inherits the company's new design language (also seen on the new Moto X and G).
HTC One M9+
The One M9+ continues the same design heritage
of the previous generation One M8 while improving on all aspects. There was an
M9 too but for India, the company decided to go straight to the M9+, probably
because people complained about the lack of duo camera and fingerprint sensor.
Like the One M8, the Duo Camera uses a second
lens to capture depth detail so that you can change focus, apply a 3D effect,
add shapes and other elements into your photos. In normal mode, the camera
captures 20 MP stills and video in up to 4K resolution (3840 x 2176
pixels).Everything is blazing fast and there are multiple shooting options on
offer.
Samsung Galaxy S6
The S6 and S6 Edge marked a massive improvement
in perceived quality for Samsung.Apart from superlative finish and a dazzling
screen (which we called the best screen of any mobile device), it has an
exceptional camera. Both cameras have an aperture of f1.9 apart from let ting
in more light, they also capture photos with shallow depth of field, lending a
more `professional' look.
You can double tap the home button -even from
standby -to instantly start the camera and the shutter lag is minimal. The
optical image stabilisation really shines on the S6 and it gives you sharp
results where most others will falter it even works really well on videos up
to 1080p (higher resolution video recording is possible, but without OIS).
LG G4
Even though it's inspired by the design of the
previous G3, the G4 is a worthy new flagship with several improvements in
design, performance and camera. The G4 gets a 16 MP camera with f1.8 aperture,
a fast and accurate laser autofocus system, dual tone flash and optical image
stabilisation. On paper, these are the best specs on any camera phone today.
The camera offers three modes: simple, auto and
manual. Auto mode gives you additional shooting modes -dual mode, panorama and
HDR. Switching to manual brings up more options like the ability to shoot in
RAW format (.DNG) as well as access to settings for white balance, manual focus
and shutter speed. The quality of images is fantastic. Coupled with the accurate
AF system and .OIS, it's hard to get a bad shot with the G4
