NIKOLA
CHARGE HARVESTER
Smartphones
are power guzzlers, and most need to be charged at least once in 24 hours. Now,
boffins at US-based Nikola Labs are working on a smartphone case that recycles radio
frequency (RF) waves and feeds it back into your smartphone battery . RF
waves like 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transmit data through the air, but in
practice, only
a percentage of the device's signal is utilized, while the rest of it is
wasted.
Nikola
Labs is using a patent-pending technology, developed at the Ohio State
University, to
capture this wasted `signal' and convert it into DC power that is fed back into
the phone's battery
.
In
preliminary tests, the Nikola casing boosted smartphone batteries by up to 30%.
It didn't impact data transmission rates, or even call
quality, while its high-strength polycarbonate build
also acted as a protective cover for the handset.
To
begin with, these cases will be available for the Apple iPhone 6 and Samsung
Galaxy S6, but
will soon expand to include next-gen devices. Nikola Labs also plans on
developing an
entire platform of wireless charging solutions for a greener

DROPRINTER
What
if you could carry along a portable printer in your handbag or backpack to
print stuff directly
from your smartphone? droPrinter, conceptualized by an Australia-based company of the same name, will allow you to print
anything e-mails, messages, to-do lists and even
web pages that are shown on your
smartphone's screen. It uses rolls of standard thermal paper
the type that pops out of ATM machines and from supermarket bill counters.
To
print, you will need to pair the droPrinter with your handset and use its
Android or iOS
app. The device's battery, its developers say, will last for seven hours of
continuous printing.
Seems like a neat mobile accessory, eh?
