TECH SPECIAL......... Why You Don't Need a Traditional Desktop Anymore

Why You Don't Need a Traditional Desktop Anymore

If you're a student or working professional, you probably need a laptop -but the traditional desktop has now been rendered irrelevant, thanks to the changing scenario and increasingly powerful portable devices

Size vs Portability This is often the easiest way to help you decide between a desktop and laptop. If you need to carry around the computer with you often, get a laptop. If it will only be used at a home/office, get a desktop as it would give you better hardware and performance for the same price. However, this point is now moot because you can get laptops with powerful processors, 8GB RAM, graphics cards, 1TB storage and Windows 8.
Rational Needs It's natural to want the best specifications without considering if it going to be utilised. With the evolution of technology, tablets are now powerful enough to be used for documents, web and multimedia. If you are into a lot of photo editing and some gaming, laptops with dedicated graphics card are easily available.
Unless you wan to do serious photo/HD video editing or hardcore gaming, a desktop is not required.
Power Consumption The typical desktop consumes a lot more power than the typical laptop or tablet. The difference can be up to 10 times -more if you have a performance machine.
Factor in the amount of use and what it's going to be used for. If you need something for light work that's going to be powered on 24x7, consider one of the alternatives mentioned. You'll likely recover the amount you spend on it within its lifetime. These Guys Still Need Desktops The Storage Fanatic If you need storage space for photos, HD video and so on, a desktop is needed. Most full size desktop cabinets have room for 5 hard drives.
This means that you can hook up five 4TB hard drives for a total of 20TB. The D-I-Y-er Desktops are the way to go if you want to customise and do it with your own hands. You get to mix and match components from different manufacturers to get the best possible performance and value. The Ultimate Techie If you're obsessed with raw computing power, it's possible to create your own supercomputer by hooking up computers in a `cluster' a group of computers that work as one. A cluster combines the computing capabilities of each of the computers. The Gamer Gaming, especially with new games & multimonitor setups, requires top-spec hardware.
Gamers also need desktops that can be upgraded. Not to mention, you can add accessories like LEDs for a bit of bling! The Video Editor Laptops and tablet components are designed with lower power consumption and heat dissipation in mind, so performance with editing suffers. Editing videos requires lots of storage space too
