SPECIFICATIONS 8-inch (1280 x 800) IPS display, 1.8Ghz quad core Intel Atom processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB + microSD, 5MP + 1.2MP camera, Windows 8.1, 4,830mAh, 395g Build quality, bright & sharp display, loud audio, great battery life No HDMI out, average camera, iffy light sensor
While Android tablet are available in abundance, tablets with full Windows 8 are hard to find. Of the available ones, Acer was the only one to offer a Windows 8 based tablet with an 8-inch screen size. With the Venue 8 Pro, Dell has now made an entry into this segment.
Dell’s Windows 8 tablet is just 9mm thick and weighs 394 grams — this makes it easy to carry and hold. The textured rubber finish on the rear combined with the unibody design gives the tablet a premium look. Unlike most other Windows 8 tablets that have a prominent Windows button under the display, the Venue 8 Pro has a top mounted button. Even if you've been using a Windows 8 tablet, it takes time to get used to.
The 8-inch IPS display is sharp, offers vibrant colours, good brightness & excellent viewing angles. One issue is that the ambient light sensor keeps shifting the brightness up and down which can get irritating. Thankfully, we hear that Dell is working on an update to fix this. Also, the lack of HDMI out is a letdown.
The device features a 5MP rear camera that takes average shots. The images have noise but are passable for a tablet. Audio from the speaker is loud enough to be used as a bed stand music player.
For most scenarios, the hardware proves to be excellent. It's hard to believe that you have a fully functional Windows computer in something so slim and light. Full HD video plays without issues and we could also run GIMP for image editing. A highlight of the tablet is the incredible battery life: close to 8 hours of HD video playback on a full charge.
Overall, the Dell Venue 8 Pro is very impressive. It has a few tiny quirks, but if you are looking for a portable Windows 8 computer, we highly recommend it.
