Entry-level smartphones have
enough processing muscle to handle every productivity task smoothly and even
play Full HD movies. You can also expect a day-long battery life.
OKWU OMICRON
The Okwu Omicron packs a
Full HD display and capable processing muscle encased within a sturdy metal
frame. It is a surprise package at this price, provided you're okay with a
handset from this relatively unknown smartphone brand.
The Okwu Omicron comprises
a sturdy metal frame with a polycarbonate back panel. This construction makes it
bulky and heavy , but also sturdy and firm to grip.
It is the only handset here
that boasts of a Full HD display . Colours look neutral, and are not as vivid
as the Asus ZenFone Live. But you are presented with sharp images, text, and a
display that is legible in direct sunlight.
Its customised user
interface is basic, yet includes options like a call recorder, as well as
motion gestures to take photos and swipe in the air to change FM radio
stations.
The Omicron's rear camera
takes sharp photos that contain quite a bit of detail, including fine textures.
The front camera captures decent selfies in evenly-lit settings, but is unable
to adjust exposure properly when the subject is against a bright background.
This handset fared well in
synthetic benchmarks, coming a close second to the Meizu M5. It is capable of
handling some heavy-duty tasks like photo editing and 3D games, so long as the
device is not hampered by other resource-intensive background processes.
Audio output to the speaker
and the earphones can be boosted individually . With the former, it is just a
marginal improvement, while the latter is useful in a noisy setting.
You also get 32GB of
storage and a dedicated slot for a microSD.
On the down side, its
battery life is a dampener: Heavy or mixed usage will have you reaching for the
charger before the day is done.
