Awesome apps for the budding musician in you
These apps from the evolving world of digital acoustics can take you
closer to the pro
Whether you're an experienced musician or just starting out,
you'll find yourself using mobile technology a lot. Apps are a huge part of
this revolution, often replicating (for a few dollars) the capabilities of
thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
On iOS
GarageBand
Apple's own GarageBand is the best place to start if you're on an
iPad. The beautiful interface, easy layout and built-in tools can help get any
novice started almost immediately. The collection of `touch' instruments
includes a drum kit, piano, orga n and guitar. All sounds are sampled from the
real thing but because the instru ments are touch-based and digital, you can
learn a lot faster.Once you build up some expertise, you can actually create a
complete song on GarageBand, with upto 32 individual tracks.$4.99 (`317 approx)
DM1 Drum Machine
DM1 is a vintage-style drum machine and sequencer for your iOS
device or MAC. It includes 99 electronic drum kits.Twenty-eight classic vintage
drum kits plus 71 electronic kits, produced in-house by the developers
(FingerLab). There are five sections in the app: a drum pad, which can correct
obvious mistakes in your beat; a mixer, to adjust volume, pitch, sample length
etc; a special effects panel, overdrive, delay, reverb, envelope follower, dub
Delay etc. The other two are: step sequencer, to place your beats together; and
a song composer, to make a song with the drum pattern you create.$4.99 (`317
approx)
NanoStudio
This is a complete virtual recording studio for your iPad -the
developers of NanoStudio (Blip Interactive UK) offer the OS X or Windows
version as a free download on their website. Once you're familiar with it, you
can get the mobile app where you can layer six instruments (including the built
in synth and TRG-16 -a trigger pad instrument) or add more using in-app
purchases. It supports recording of samples using the iOS device microphone,
has a built in mixer and lets you upload creations to SoundCloud from within
the app.£4.99 (`494 approx)
On Android
Music Maker Jam
If you like to experiment with other music and pre -made loops,
this is the app for you. You can create your own music in a few minutes with
this app, thanks to the large library of professionally-created loops. You
start with four free styles and you can expand using premium genres like metal,
movie scores, house, dubstep and so on. There's an 8-channel mixer built in,
real-time effects, a `shake to remix' feature and a vibrant community to guide
you. Music Maker Jam is also available for iOS and Windows 8.Free to start,
in-app purchases for additional features
Metronome Beats
A metronome is a device that uses loud taps or clicks to help you
keep a beat but rather than lug around a physical device, this free app does
the job for you on your Android device. The developers suggest that it is not
just a tool for musical instruments but also comes handy to keep a beat while
dancing where a rhythm is required. You can select a beat between 1 to 300. And
if you don't know the tempo you need, just tap it out for a few seconds and the
app will continue. The free version is ad supported. You can buy the pro
version that comes without ads and more features for Rs 175.
