GADGET GIZMO
SPECIAL
Samsung's Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+
The sleeker Note 5 targets phablet naysayers,
while the S6 Edge+ gets a bigger screen than its predecessor and additional
curved-edge multi-tasking functionality
Samsung debuted its latest flagship smartphones
the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 at its Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event
in New York.
Both devices are scheduled to hit stores in
North America later this month, with launches in other regions planned for
September.
Both the S6 Edge+ and Note 5 feature 5.7inch
AMOLED displays, with octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC processors and 4 GB RAM
powering them. Both devices also pack in identical cameras a 16 megapixel
shooter at the back and a 5 megapixel front-facing camera and the phones will
also be able to live-stream to YouTube.
Samsung claims the S6 Edge+ makes significantly
better use of the edge of its curved display, allowing users to pull up and
switch to frequently used apps and contacts on the fly.The Note 5, meanwhile,
now features a curved back to resemble the S6, with the aim being to fit
comfortably in one hand and win over the phablet naysayers.
The Note's S Pen has also got a few tweaks. The
stylus now pops out with a click and you can begin jotting down on the screen
even with the phone in standby. Those aside, however, the Note 5 appears to be
a subtle upgrade over the Note 4, with the changes coming more in terms of
refinement and the obligatory hardware improvements.
The differences between the S6 Edge+ and the S6
Edge, however, are more pronounced, the most obvious being the much larger
size.Where its predecessor sported a 5.1-inch screen, the S6 Edge+ matches the
Note 5 with a 5.7-inch display.
The other change, as mentioned above, is on the
software side. The curved screen seemed like a gimmick in the S6 Edge, but
Samsung claims to have paid a lot of attention towards making those curved
edges of the screen more conducive to the user experience.
Both the S6 Edge+ and the Note 5 will be
available in 32 GB and 64 GB capacities. The lack of a 128 GB variant seems
odd, considering that the iPhone 6 does offer it, and more so since neither
phone offers expandable memory.
Both phones will employ Samsung's Fast Charging
technology, which allows for quicker wired and wireless charging. According to
Samsung, a full charge can be achieved through wired charging in 90 minutes and
wireless charging in 120 minutes. Connectivity features are also identical for
both phones, with 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.2 and Micro-USB 2.0 included. The phones
will also support the upcoming Samsung Pay mobile payment tech.
In the US, the S6 Edge+ is available without
contract through carriers at $740 (approx. Rs 48,000) for the 32 GB variant,
while the 64 GB model is priced $840 (approx. Rs 54,500).Meanwhile, the 32 GB
Note 5 is priced $815 (approx. Rs 53,000), with the 64 GB variant going for
$915 (approx. Rs 59,500). Both devices will be offered in white, black, gold
and silver colour options.
It's unclear when the new flagships will make
their way to India. At the time of writing, Samsung India officials were
unavailable for comment.
