Personalizing Strategic Management
The
words "Strategic Management" usually evoke a high level,
top management idea of managing goals and initiatives of an
organization. Most times, people do not associate Strategic
Management with personal character development, branding and
management. The conscious management of self, interactions, decisions
and how these drive or propel one to the next phase is not usually of
high importance for most.
What
if we changed that? What if we began applying basic principles of
Strategic Management to the management of ourselves and our careers.
If the same analysis and discipline required to make strategic
decisions for long term benefits were consciously applied to our
attitudes, presentation and interactions we will be better managers
of ourselves.
There
should be a constant learning process in all that we do. Most times
as employees, individual contributors and managers, we do not
frequently assess ourselves, our approach to people, things and their
general effectiveness. We often get stuck in being who "we are"
and undervalue the importance of adaptation and personal change
management.
A
few simple principles to incorporate into your life if you find that
there isn't a strategic awareness to your personal brand management
are -
1)
Assess - a thorough assessment of where you are and where you want to
go, and what limitations are in your path. Base this on internal and
trusted external input.
2)
Incorporate - incorporate the suggestions and changes that would
align you towards the destination you desire.
3)
Initiate - develop strategic initiatives to focus your attention on
for important long term improvement.
4)
Maintain - continuously aim to incorporate newly acquired knowledge
about yourself, your actions nod impressions you leave on others and
consciously focus on continuous improvement.
How
have you managed yourself and your career or business? What steps do
you actively take in your personal development process?
