When Flipkart launched the Moto E, it redefined what a budget smartphone should be like by offering the latest Android OS, good build quality and performance. The phone got rave reviews and is often `sold out'. Within a few weeks, Micromax has launched this, a direct competitor to Moto E.
The Unite 2 is the same price and at least on paper, offers a lot more than the Moto E. It has a larger 4.7-inch display , autofocus camera, front camera, a quad core processor, larger battery and overall slimmer design. In comparison, the Moto E has a 4.5inch screen, fixed focus camera, no front camera and dual core processor. The Unite 2 also has support for 21 regional languages you can access the phonebook and keyboard with the language of your choice.
The display has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Micromax has tweaked the user interface and icons so that you do not realize the low resolution unless compared with a higher resolution display side-by-side.
Performance from the quad core Mediatek processor and 1GB RAM is good. You get smooth multi-tasking and zippy navigation. 720p HD videos play fine on the device, but the phone is unable to play full HD videos smoothly . We were able to play games like Subway Surfers and CSR Racing without issues but heavier games like Asphalt 7 saw visible stuttering.
Camera on the Unite 2 took photos with good details and natural colours in daylight. Indoors also, the images turned out to be excellent with minimal noise visible. The front camera was a letdown it just couldn't capture enough light and tended to underexpose everything.
The loudspeaker output was good enough for personal listening it proved useless for voice calls if there was lot of ambient noise.
On a full charge, the Unite 2 lasted us a full day as expected. With the Unite 2, Micromax has proven that they are ready to compete with a global brand if required.
