Even though fourth gen Intel processors have been around for a few months, they aren’t found in too many compact laptops. Dell’s latest Inspiron 11 (3000 series) is one of the first 11-inch notebooks with a 4th gen Intel processor.
Like most Inspiron laptops, the Inspiron 11 also has a plastic body. However, the silver colour, matte finish and tapered design gives it a premium appearance. Inside, the palm rest has a matte finish with a large trackpad and a spill resistant keyboard. While the keyboard is comfortable to use thanks to the large individual keys, it is not backlit. It would be great if Dell provided a backlit option in all its laptops.
The 11.6-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and offers good horizontal viewing angles. However, vertical viewing angles are poor and we felt the screen was too reflective. Having said that, it's still better than competing 11.6-inch notebooks in this price range — HP's TouchSmart 11 and Acer's Aspire V5.
Hardware includes a dual core Celeron processor, 2GB RAM and 500GB hard drive. In Windows Experience Index we got a score of 4.6 (lowest for graphics) — certainly impressive for the price. We faced no issues with full HD videos and even basic image editing using GIMP. We noticed that when taxed, the laptop starts to heat up considerably within just a half hour of use.
We were able to get over 6 hours of backup from the 3-cell battery, which is quite remarkable. A slight sore point was the large power brick. At the same price, you can also look at the HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11. While it has 4GB RAM and offers similar features, it is powered by an AMD APU processor.
