SMARTPHONE Mid-range Powerhouses
Here are five of the best
Android smartphones in the competitive and lively Rs 15,000 segment
The Rs 15,000-and-under
segment is the hottest in the Indian smartphone market, with new phones coming
out regularly with constantly improving hardware. It's a wide-ranging segment
featuring many new brands, but one that has also caught the attention of the
bigger players. In this selection, we're looking at only the contenders that
were launched within the last six months. This way, they have newer hardware
that won't phase out quick ly, along with software that should be supported
longer.
Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime
The Galaxy J7 Prime is
Samsung's attempt to compete in this space that currently is dominated by new
entrants from China. It features a metal body, an Exynos 7870 octacore chip,
3GB RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. A 13-megapixel f1.9 aperture camera takes
good photos in most conditions, and the 8MP front cam's wide selfie mode
captures those groupfies easily. A 3300mAh battery ensures a long uptime, and
the software also switches to power reserve mode once the battery hits 15 per
cent.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4
The Redmi Note 4 is the
follow-up to the popular Redmi Note 3, with incremental improvements. It houses
the same power-efficient Snapdragon 625 as the Moto G5 Plus. Although the
design is slightly tweaked, the Redmi Note 4 is as big as its predecessor due
to the big 4100mAh battery inside. This means it will easily last you over a day
of typical use. The phone also acts as an infrared remote for controlling
appliances like TVs, ACs, music systems, etc. MIUI 8 lets you do things like
run two WhatsApp accounts at once.
Moto G5 Plus
The Moto G5 Plus is the
fifth iteration of the popular Moto G series, bringing some much needed
improvements. First up, there's an aluminium body that offers better durability
and feel, and it gives the long-tome posterchild of the budget smartphone
segement some welcome premium appeal. The 5.2-inch display makes the phone
easier to hold, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625 is adequately powerful. It runs
Android powerful. It runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. The 12-megapixel
rear camera has fast autofocus and a big f1.7 aperture, while the 5MP front cam
shoots in wide angle. An adequate 3000mAh battery tops up quickly with the
bundled TurboPower charger.
Lenovo K6 Note
The Lenovo K6 Note is
packed with some unique features, such as Dolby Atmos support, which enhances
audio output via bottom-firing speakers. There's Lenovo TheaterMax 3.0 VR
support too, with the 5.5-inch 1080p display acting as the viewfinder (although
the Rs 1,000 ANT VR headset is sold separately). It's powered by a Snapdragon
430 chip with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. The 16-megapixel rear camera with
phase detection autofocus is satisfactory for casual photography, and the
4000mAh battery means you won't have to plug it in too often.
Asus Zenfone 3s Max (ZC521TL)
If battery life is your
biggest priority, then the ZenFone 3s Max has a huge 5000mAh battery. If that
wasn't enough, it also has five battery-saving modes to make it last even
longer.Due to a smaller 5.2inch display, the phone doesn't feel unwieldy
either. It runs the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, but also contains a lot of
bloatware (i.e. unnecessary features). The display resolution is only 720p,
while most similarly priced phones have 1080p displays. If you don't care about
features and just want a phone that lasts for two days on a single charge, the
ZenFone 3s Max is a decent choice.
