HEALTH SPECIAL .....................Winter winners: diet tips and skincare solutions

Winter winners: diet tips and skincare solutions

Winter is when your skin undergoes changes because of the harsh weather conditions. However, according to ayurveda, this is also the best time to strengthen your immune system, and make your skin look lustrous and youthful.

Kapha constitution
People of the kapha constitution have smooth and lustrous skin, but suffer from poor circulation. Their skin tends to become slightly rough in winter.
Diet tips: Go easy on salt. Foods that suit this dosha include soybean, tofu, soya paneer and missa atta. Such grains can be made into vegetable dalia or missi roti with vegetables.
Skincare advice: Exfoliate with apricot scrub or a moong dal powder scrub followed by a banana face mask. People in this category are prone to water retention, so it is important to get ayurvedic treatments like panchkarma. This enhances lymph circulation.

Pitta constitution
People with a pitta constitution have oily and sensitive skin, break out into rashes easily and also tend to develop moles and freckles. Winter is the best time for these people. They should avoid prolonged exposure to heaters and harsh skin creams.
Diet tips: People of this dosha should have five almonds and half a teaspoon of triphala powder with water every day, incorporate lots of green vegetables and stay away from fried foods.
Skincare advice: People with a pitta constitution can use a mix of aloe vera and almond oil as a face mask every night. Avocado or olive oils can be used for body massages; go for abhyangam to get luminous skin.

Vata constitution
This skin type is the most vulnerable to winter chills and is prone to damage from the cold.
Diet tips: Have wheat porridge or oats and milk with dry fruits. Thick soups or a glass of hot milk with honey or saffron at night can be beneficial.
Skincare advice: Use a lot of oil in winter. Alternatively, use a coconut cream and banana pack, along with a mild scrub. Also go for a weekly massage.
