TECH REVIEW Asus FonePad
PRICE 15,999 The FonePad may be just another 7-inch Android tablet but it
goes one up on the Google Nexus by including voice calling, expandable storage
and a better design at the same price. Look around the back and you’ll see the
prominent ‘Intel Inside’ logo. This is the first tablet powered by a single
core, 1.2Ghz Intel Atom processor.
Right up front, you’ll see that the FonePad has great build quality. It has a high-quality silver-grey metal case with only a small removable plastic panel for the wireless antenna, micro SIM and micro SD. Being only 10.4mm thin throughout, it’s also easy to hold. The IPS LCD screen is bright, offers pleasing colours and great viewing angles. The 1280 x 800 resolution results in a pixel density of 216ppi – higher than most 7-inch Android tablets. The only issue is that the screen shows up fingerprints and smudges rather easily.
There are a lot of useful software enhancements included. Asus Splendid lets you change the hue, saturation and colour temperature of the screen. The ‘floating’ apps let you run multiple apps side by side (browser, email, memo, calculator etc). You also get a built in call blocker, App Locker (password protect access to your apps), additional settings (outdoor mode for the screen, screen saver and so on) and several Asus designed widgets.
The software benchmarks like AnTuTu and Quadrant place the performance of the FonePad at roughly the same level as older devices like LG’s Optimus 2X and HTC Desire HD. It’s not blazing fast but great for the price. It scores well on battery life though, lasting easily a day and a half with 3G data and calling. No issues with call quality but the speakerphone could have been louder.
Overall, a great device for the price. If you need a 3G calling tablet, you can also consider Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2.
