NEW CURES FOR OLD ILLS
PESTS CONTROL INFECTIONS
The repulsive cockroaches that we kill with sprays could actually save our lives. Scientists at Nottingham University found that powerful antibiotic properties in the brains of cockroaches and locusts can kill more than 90 per cent of bacteria — including the deadly methicillin-resistant Staphlococcus aureus (MRSA) and pathogenic E-coli — without harming human cells. They hope this discovery will pave the way for new treatment for bacterial infections that are increasingly resistant to current drugs. New antibiotics could also provide alternatives to the currently available ones that are effective but have serious and unwanted side effects. The roach-inspired therapy is expected be available to the public in five to 10 years.
