INTERNET SPECIAL... 6 Email Desktop Management Clients For Better

6 Email Desktop Management Clients For Better

Why desktop email? Multiple accounts, offline access, social networking and quicker search are just some reasons.
Some free email clients that keep you ahead of the curve reviewed

Claws Mail
www.claws-mail.org
This lightweight mail client is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has a clean and simple interface with support for multiple accounts, threaded display, colour labels and plug-ins. However, it lacks automatic mail account configuration and does not support direct importing of mail from Outlook or Thunderbird.
Stand-out feature.
Offers multiple plug-ins: spam filter, HTML viewer, calendar, PDF viewer, encryption etc to enhance the overall experience.
Verdict
Great for users with older or slower computers as it is not heavy on system resources and various features can be customised as per your choice.

Foxmail
www.foxmail.com.cn
Offering powerful mail management, Foxmail is available for Windows and Mac. It supports various webmail as well as exchange mail and you can also preview attachments (select formats) within the app. The only issue is that the program installs in Chinese by default (steps to switch to English are given).
Stand-out feature.
Retina display and gesture support for MAC. Handy meeting manager that lets you create and manage meeting schedules.
Verdict
A powerful mail client that offers useful features. It has a few quirks, but they are expected to be fixed in the upcoming version.

Opera Mail
www.opera.com/computer/mail
The new kid on the block, Opera Mail offers a hat tip to online Gmail with features like conversation view and customisable labels. It also lets you view multiple emails in tabs — so that you can easily switch between them or reply to multiple people at the same time.
Stand-out feature.
Apart from speed, RSS feeds and tabs, Opera makes it easy for Gmail users to switch to offline mode because it copies all your labels over.
Verdict
Like Opera's browser, Mail can get more done in less time. Nothing very revolutionary but it's totally free & available on both Windows & Mac.

Thunderbird
www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird
Probably the one with the maximum features and also the most popular. Thunderbird is made by Mozilla (of Firefox fame) & has been around since 2004. While active development stopped in 2012, it still has a large installed userbase, an active community & many powerful extensions.
Stand-out feature.
The basic version is very lightweight — most features are added via extensions, so it's completely customisable to your needs.
Verdict
The de-facto standard when it comes to desktop email — it's available on all platforms and you just can't go wrong with it.

Windows Live Mail
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/ windows-live/essentials
Available as part of the free Windows Essentials suite of programs, Windows Live Mail is the one to go for if you still miss Outlook and Outlook Express. Apart from Hotmail/Live accounts, it also supports all other webmail, RSS feeds, Windows Live Contacts and has a great reminder feature.
Stand-out feature.
The suite gives you all the Live features: Sky-Drive, Movie Maker, Messenger and so on — you can choose to install the programs you want.
Verdict
Although this is Windows only (also works with Windows XP), it's much faster & slicker than Outlook Express.

Zimbra
www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html
This one offers a unified inbox for all your mail accounts and is available for Windows, MAC and Linux. It syncs with your webmail as well as Google Calendar and can be used when online or offline. It collects updates from your social networks and displays them in a single window for quicker access.
Stand-out feature.
Combines an email client and a social media manager in a single interface. Lets you save image attachments directly to your Flickr account.
Verdict
If you want your mails, calendar, contacts and social network updates in a single interface, this is the program to choose.

  ANDROID
K-9 MAIL
This open-source mail client supports multiple accounts and offers a unified inbox. The interface looks a bit dated, but K-9 makes up for it with the sheer number of features. You can choose to store your mails and attachments in internal or external storage, encrypt outgoing mails and even disable notifications for a specific time period.
MAILDROID
Although it is ad-supported, Maildroid's interface closely resembles the new Gmail for Android. It comes with an optional spam system service ( 54/month) that keeps your mailbox clean and offers various tweaks for the power user. While deleting a mail, you can choose to remove it from the device or from the device and server both.
IOS MAILBOX
Mailbox offers a clean interface that makes it easy to organise mails. It currently works only with Gmail but supports up to five accounts at a time. One of the most useful features of the app is the ability to snooze mails — you can make some mails 'invisible' in the app for a select time period so that you can focus on the more important ones.
INCREDIMAIL
This iPad app offers a magazine-style unified inbox that could change the way you read email. You can attach photos & videos from within the app instead of opening Photos. Contact photos are imported from Facebook and shown next to mails. You also get previews of any link attached in a mail and links sent by you appear as preview snippets.
