MANAGEMENT / LEADERSHIP SPECIAL.. I INSPIRE THEREFORE I AM!

 I INSPIRE THEREFORE I AM!

One of the most essential qualities that a good leader must possess is the ability to inspire others. But it is easier said than done

    Every individual wants to work with an inspiring leader. It not only brings new ideas to the table, but also causes engagement among employees.
    What does it mean to inspire your employees? Govind Krishna S, vice president, Tally Solutions, answers, “To inspire employees is to allow them to surprise themselves. Everybody has perceptions about their capabilities and tends to work within their selflimiting boundaries. Employees who shun these boundaries and achieve results they never thought they could accomplish, have been inspired. Inspiring employees thus means extracting their best by working with them and helping them to take up challenges beyond their comfort zones.”
    Inspiring others is an absolutely essential quality for a leader. Yateesh Srivastava, chief marketing officer & headtalent, AEGON Religare Life Insurance, tells us why, “Motivation is all about having a shared vision and belief. In order to get others to share your vision, you must have the ability to be able to compellingly lay out your vision in front of others and have them trust you enough to accept it.”
    The 5 Ps of inspiring leadership, according to Michael Kerr, president, Humor at Work include:
Passion: Leaders must demonstrate genuine enthusiasm towards new goals, innovative ideas and their employees;
Purpose: To be inspired, employees must understand the common purpose they are working towards; Progress: Employees must be able to see the progress being made at both - the business and their own level of work;
Pride: A sense of pride is one of the most powerful motivators there is, so inspiring leaders need to recognise and appreciate their employees with genuine praise on a regular basis;
Personal: Everyone has different motivators and de-motivators at work and inspiring leaders must be careful not to treat everyone the same way.
    How can a leader inspire one’s employees to perform vibrantly and more productively? Nishant Kolgaonkar, vice president-HR, Allcargo Logistics Ltd, answers, “Leaders cannot inspire others unless they are inspired. To deliver extraordinary performance and garner employee commitment, leaders must avidly listen, encourage and energise employees. For real inclusion, people need to feel intimately connected to their tasks. Leaders and managers should strive to remove barriers and obstacles that impede employee performance and enhance productivity.”
    Alok Nigam, group HR head, Bhartiya International Ltd, elaborates, “Inspiration and engagement have a great correlation. Employee retention is one of the biggest challenges today and the ability to engage an employee with the right kind of inspiration resulting into self-motivation, is key to ring-fence your valued talent.”
