Management graduates take the path less travelled: IIMC to AIFF

Two Grads Join Football Federation As Interns To Chalk Out Strategies For Improving Supply Side Economics Of Fresh Soccer Talent In Country

FROM IIMC to AIFF. That’s linear progression these days for management graduates in India. Two IIM Calcutta (IIMC) grads, just out of the Joka campus in 2010, have joined the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) as interns to chalk out strategies for improving the supply side economics of fresh soccer talent in the country.
Mayank Jain and Vaibhav Pandey of the Class of 2010 are now working on an initiative to structure the development of youth in Indian football and chalk out statewise implementation plans. The project also includes identifying marketing opportunities involving corporates and sponsors.
“While the focus is not on the national team per se, the idea is to create a supply line of good football talent and capture that from the school level itself,” said 23-year-old engineering grad Vaibhav, who, along with Mayank, will soon be joining the marketing divisions of two FMCG majors. Mayank, 25, said: “Both of us are passionate about sports and marketing is our strength, We were seeking opportunities in something that combined our areas of interest. We’d written to various sportsbodies and the AIFF project sounded really interesting.”
Tathagata Mukherjee, AIFF’s director for national team and Vision India Aid 27 said: “One of the challenges we identified in Indian football is that the youth development system is not so structured. All the states need to be streamlined to meet the nation’s needs. During this month-and-a-half long project, Vaibhab and Mayank are helping to identify the marketing potential in conjunction with the AIFF marketing department. This is actually part of a bigger project and it’s great to have them on board. I’ve already told them to identify key people so that the continuity is maintained. We are looking at top management schools. After all, HR is a basic challenge in Indian football.”
